Some mares lose their babies due to genetic abnormalities. We may retrieve an embryo in such a case, but the recipient mare will lose it just as your mare has. However, another possibility does exist. Your mare may not be recognizing that she is pregnant, which she must do by day 14 of gestation or she will spontaneously abort her foal. If this is the case, the embryo can be transferred on day 7 and the recipient mare will recognize the embryo resulting in the healthy, happy foal your mare was unable to carry.
