Equine embryo transfer is a technique used by
veterinarians to move a fertilized egg (embryo) from a donor mare to a recipient
mare. The recipient mare or surrogate mare will carry the foal through gestation and
deliver the foal 11 months later.
Reasons to do embryo transfer?
- Allows a donor mare to continue in training.
- Allows several offspring per year from the same outstanding
mare.
- Eliminates the wear and tear of gestation and lactation
on the valuable donor mare.
- Allows offspring from reproductively challenged mares.
